We planned to stay in Athens for two days, but long story short, we only had one full day to get all sightseeing in and make the best of it.
Where to Stay?
We stayed at Athens Studios, which turned out to be the best decision in the shortest amount of time we had. It is in the heart of Athens and walking distance to all the historical sites. It is a hostel that is part of Athens backpackers, if you’re on a budget this place is perfect for you!
You’re able to either share a dorm with other travelers or you can get your own little apartment. They have a sports bar, that provides a happy hour from 5-7PM and also trivia games and more. It’s a great way to interact with other travelers staying there.
What to see and how?
Athens Studios offers a free walking tour from Monday – Thursday at 10:45AM. Unfortunately, the tour guide was sick during the time we stayed there, so we looked into other options.
We ended up going on the hop on hop off bus through CitySightseeing, so we could see as many places as possible. It dropped us off at 15 different locations and took 15 -30 minutes for the next bus to come pick us up. While on the bus they provide headphones so you can listen to the history and culture of Athens and Greece.
Other tours you can do?
- Athens walking tour
- Athens Electric Bike Tour
- Acropolis of Athens
- Acropolis Museum
- National Archaeological Museum
- Temple of Olympian Zeus, Athens
- Syntagma Square
- Panathenaic Stadium
Where to eat?
While we were walking to the Acropolis Museum, a server stopped us so we could try out the restaurant. Of course, we said no and went on our way. Once we’re done with our sightseeing, our paths crossed again so we just decided to give the food a try. It was worth it!
I ordered the pork chops, my sister ordered the lamb chops. The food was cooked to perfection, the service was quick and great. Plus we got free dessert watermelon, I’m not going to say they did that because we were black. But they quickly noticed not all black people like watermelon, since we didn’t eat it ha. My sister and I are not big fans!
Other places to try:
- Acropolis Museum Cafe
- Fish Cafe (located next door to Athens Studio)
How to get around?
The best way to get around the city is either by renting a scooter, walking or you can hop on the bus. The city is served by buses and electric trolleys that must be waved down at the various stops they have. Tickets are cheap and the taxi fares are too.
Until next time!
